Randall’s Yard is a small, 5-acre family-run boutique vineyard, positioned equidistant from the Margaret River and Cowaramup townships in the world-renowned Margaret River wine region in Western Australia. Established in 1998, the vineyard is located in the premier Wallcliffe province. The vines have been ‘dry-grown’ from planting to yield super-premium fruit of great intensity of flavours and consistency over vintages. The vineyard is positioned at a high elevation, with the vine rows running in a the idealnorth-south direction to optimise the effects of both the prevailing maritime breezes and the sun. The mature vineyard is hand-pruned to very low yields, limiting vintage to around 16 -18 tonnes but greatly enhancing the quality of the fruit produced
With Margaret River often likened to St Emilion on the North Bank in Bordeaux in a warm vintage, it’s no wonder the merlot driven blends are so damn good. The great 2011 vintage produced superb premium red fruit, with the Wallcliffe merlot, cabernet franc and cabernet an absolute stand out. The quality of the Merlot particularly proved the catalyst for the winery to propose a Bordeaux blend, lead predominantly by the Merlot in a classic St Emilion style. Each of the wine components were fermented and maintained separately, with the final blend only determined once each wine had spent time in a mix of new and 12-month old French oak barrels and barriques – varying from 12 to 18 months. The final blend was made in the month prior to bottling. The finished wine is a bright ruby red with a deep purplish hue, it shows aromas of juicy, ripe plum and cassis, with a hint of cigar box and fine leather segueing to a palate brimming in ripe dark cherries and forest fruits with a soft acid complimenting the fine tannins, overlaid with a subtle smoky lift that comes from the judicious French oak maturation. Superb drinking now or will reward cellaring for a decade or more.
