After nearly 10 years at Willyabrup, Howling Wolves has moved to a new ‘lair’ and cellar door at the magical Rivendell Winery Estate. Rivendell is nestled amongst the lush-green, rolling landscape bordering Wildwood Road, in the beautiful northern Yallingup sub-region of Margaret River. Acres of glorious, manicured gardens and lawns, create a magical haven to relax and take advantage of all the hedonistic pleasures of the Margaret River.
Swathed in lush ivy and greenery, the unique, rustic wooden Cellar Door and Restaurant is perched high on a rolling ridge, overlooking the valley and forested hills rising in the distance. There you can relax, and experience the natural pleasures of one of Margaret River’s finest natural environments, while tasting Howling Wolves’ celebrated range of premium Margaret River wine ranges - at the cellar door or accompanying a gourmet dining experience prepared by celebrated chef Sven Hug at our enchanting restaurant.
Our wines are made from premium fruit grown only in the world-renowned appellation of Margaret River. The vineyards include Rivendell Estate in the premier northern sub-region of Yallingup, to parcels sourced from selected growers in the celebrated vineyards of Willyabrup to the cool climate and extraordinary gravelly soils of Karridale, to the far south. Each lending their unique terroir and microclimate to the extraordinary wines they create, yielding premium and super-premium ranges of exceptional quality - always varietally correct and unmistakably Margaret River.
The Rivendell vineyards were established in 1987 with the super-premium Cabernet Sauvignon vines now over 30 years old and producing exceptional fruit at less than 4 tonne to the hectare.
There are two Vineyards on the estate. The ‘old-vine’ Cabernet Vineyard is situated in a sheltered valley, overlooking the Leeuwin-Naturaliste ridge, protected from the strong winds and capturing the morning sunlight with the northeast exposure allowing early ripening. This, combined with free draining granite and laterite gravel soils creates a perfect microclimate for growing and ripening premium Cabernet grapes to their fullest flavour. The 30 year-old vines are hardly prolific, producing fruit at less that 4 tonne to the hectare – but what they lack in productivity, they more than make up in super-premium quality.
The second vineyard is located lower in a protected, sun-drenched valley adjacent to Wildwood Road and the entry to the estate. It is located on rocky ground with granite and gravelly soils - the perfect terroir for fostering super-premium Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard is currently under renovation with new plantings of Moss Wood cloned Cabernet Sauvignon going in this spring. With patience and care this hallowed ground promises to produce some of the finest Cabernet fruit in Margaret River, destined for Howling Wolves’ Trophy winning “Small Batch” range.
Discover the herb wheel (the source of many of chef Sven Hug’s flavours), a parterre of more formal floral plantings and high, manicured hedges concealing even more private botanical wonders. Seats encourage quiet contemplation and small sculptures and fountains hiding amongst the foliage add a Romanesque stature to some gardens.
Meander through plantings of aromatic rosemary and purple lavender, and luck upon a secret garden of heritage roses, behind the stunning Lilli Pilli hedge. Relax on the leveled, manicured lawn area, also used for wedding marquees, summer concerts and sundowners and the perfect children's play area. There is even a small orchard of Fig, Apple, Pear, Plum, Citrus and rare Lemonade trees. The gardens also provide a delightful outlook when enjoying a sundrenched lunch or Rivendell’s famous home preserves and a Devonshire tea
al fresco, on the deck.
